Our history

2003-06

Dafydd Stuttard writes the first version of Burp, with actual burping sounds!
Burp Suite v1.0 launches, including Burp Proxy, Sock, Spider, and Repeater.

2007-08

1st edition of the Web Application Hackers Handbook launches, reaching over 100k security professionals.
Burp Suite scanning engine (Burp Scanner) launched.

2011-14

Burp Suite downloaded over 10k times per month.
PortSwigger first featured in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for App Security Testing.

2015-18

James Kettle joins to lead PortSwigger Research; publishes original research on server-side template injection.
BApp (Burp App) store launches, now with over 200 community-developed extensions.

2018-21

Burp Suite Enterprise Edition launches to enable large enterprises to scan at scale and achieve DevSecOps.
Web Security Academy achieves one million user milestone, one year after launch.

2021 and beyond

Enable our 70,000+ customers, including 16,000 enterprises, to secure the web.
Enjoy our brand new HQ, designed to enable us to continue doing our best work toward achieving our mission statement.
